The most decorated battleship in the history of the United States is done with war. The engines of the vessel, the Battleship New Jersey, are no longer permitted to operate, by order of the U.S. Navy. But on a windy afternoon in March, tugboats pushed and pulled the ship away from land for the first time in more than 20 years. “You’ll get me crying,” Ms. Smith, 87, said, describing the emotions she felt as a mammoth American flag was hoisted aloft during the shifting of colors before the Battleship New Jersey left the dock on March 21. Ms. Smith, a writer who lives in New Jersey, was on hand in 1999, too, when the ship made its way through the Panama Canal, headed toward its new career as a museum and memorial.

Lou Conter, the last known survivor of the battleship Arizona, which sank with the loss of 1,177 sailors and Marines in Japan’s sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, plunging the United States into World War II, died on Monday at his home in Grass Valley, Calif. “The ship was consumed in a giant fireball,” he wrote in his memoir, “The Lou Conter Story: From U.S.S. Arizona Survivor to Unsung American Hero” (2021), a collaboration with Annette C. Hull and Warren R. Hull. Mr. Conter, who was knocked forward but uninjured, tended to survivors, many of them blinded and badly burned. Only 93 of those who were aboard the ship at the time lived; 242 other crew members were ashore.

CNN —Officials using DNA analysis have identified the remains of a 19-year-old Virginian sailor killed in a World War II attack more than 80 years ago, the United States Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced Thursday. David Walker, of Norfolk, Virginia, served as a Mess Attendant 3rd Class while assigned to the battleship USS California. The ship was docked at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, when Japan conducted a surprise military strike on the Hawaii naval base. Multiple torpedoes and bombs hit the vessel, causing it to catch fire and slowly flood, resulting in the deaths of 103 crewmen including Walker, according to a news release from the agency. His remains were identified using anthropological, dental analysis and mitochondrial DNA analysis by the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System, the release states.

Because in a quirk of geography and history, Hawaii is not technically covered by the NATO pact. Mengshin Lin/AP“People tend to assume Hawaii is part of the US and therefore it’s covered by NATO,” he says. The exception is spelled out in the Washington Treaty, the document that established NATO in 1949, a decade before Hawaii became a state. It also says any island territories must be in the North Atlantic, north of the Tropic of Cancer. Hawaii, Guam, Taiwan and North KoreaSome experts say times have changed in the decades since the Washington Treaty was signed – and argue today’s political situation in the Indo-Pacific might require a rethink.

Nicknamed "Big J," the New Jersey served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, during which it was the only battleship to be reactivated. The warship was decommissioned for the last time in 1991, entering the reserve fleet while the details of converting it into a museum ship were being ironed out. In 1999, Congress allowed Big J, under the management of nonprofit Home Port Alliance, to be turned into a museum ship. Wilmington Trust chief economist Luke Tilley said Tuesday that he isn't expecting any big changes in the Federal Reserve's posture tomorrow, but that the central bank could keep laying the groundwork for rate cuts later this year. And what they need to start pivoting towards is sort of confirming the expectation of rate cuts more and more," Tilley said. The Wilmington Trust team expects the first rate cut from the Fed to come on May 1. The Fed could also point to international developments like the conflict in the Middle East as a potential reason for caution on inflation, Tilley said. I don't think that that would cause them to not cut, but they will definitely cite some of those risks," he said.

But aerial, land and underwater robots, teamed with humans, are poised to play a major role in warfare. Evidence of such change is already emerging from the war in Ukraine. There, even rudimentary teams of humans and machines operating without significant artificial-intelligence powered autonomy are reshaping the battlefield. Simple, remotely piloted drones have greatly improved the lethality of artillery, rockets and missiles in Ukraine, according to military analysts who study the conflict. Both Russian and Ukrainian forces are integrating traditional weapons with AI, satellite imaging and communications, as well as smart and loitering munitions, according to a May report from the Special Competitive Studies Project, a non-partisan U.S. panel of experts.
